On October 22, 2020, Mr. M. Nurdin as Deputy of Destination and Infrastructure Development of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) together with Mr. Rizal Panrelly as Deputy Assistant of Waste and Waste Management from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, 10 staff of Kemenparekraf and 15 representatives of tourism management and waste banks in Banyuwangi visited Pulau Merah Beach in the purpose of a comparative study to tourism destinations that have implemented plastic waste management. On this occasion, the EcoRanger team shared about waste management practices in the tourism destinations of Pulau Merah beach which is one of the marine tourism icons in Banyuwangi Regency. Moreover, the group was invited to directly observe the waste sorting process at the Waste Management Center located about 700 meters from the tourism destination.
This visit is a continuity of the socialization and presentation of a draft technical guidance document for plastic waste management in marine tourism destinations which was implemented on 21 October 2020 at the Ketapang Indah Hotel, Banyuwangi. The participants who took part in the series of outreach events and field visits were asked to provide insight. Therefore, technical guidelines would be implementable. The plan is that there will be pilot projects in several locations in Indonesia for technical trials which are a derivative of the Regulation of the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Number 05 in 2020 concerning guidelines for managing plastic waste in marine tourism destinations.
