The Importance of Community Participation (All Parties and Groups): Express Yourself in Weekly Beach Clean Up

Weekly Beach Clean Up

Weekly Beach Clean-Up is an educational activity specifically given to business owners and visitors in a tourism destination that is done through real action. This activity is done every week on Saturday alternately in areas prone to waste generation such as Pulau Merah Beach, Mustika Beach, Wedi Ireng Beach as the main tourist attraction in Dusun Pancer Desa Sumberagung Kecamatan Pesanggaran, Banyuwangi

In this activity, the participants are encouraged to collect inorganic waste at the location, and then they learn how to sort inorganic waste that still can be recycled and inorganic waste that cannot be recycled (residual waste). Besides that, participants are also encouraged to reflect on the future of our environment and tourism destination if we don't manage our waste from now.

Why We Need Weekly Beach Clean-Up?

Waste in a coastal area does not only come from land but also comes from the ocean. On 13-18 in the Java calendar, when the highest tide happens, marine debris will be commonly found in the coastal area. This marine debris usually comes from people who discard their waste to the river. In Dusun Pancer, some people still discard their waste to the Cacalan river that directly flows into the ocean.

What's the Goal of Weekly Beach Clean-Up?

This activity aims to educate business owners, visitors, and volunteers on waste management and encourage them to actively preserve the sustainability of tourism destinations. Besides, this activity also aims to educate the participants to manage waste from the source. If managing waste from the source can be done 100%, it will help SEKOLA (Waste Management Center) to manage the waste (both organic and inorganic) more effectively.
