To coincide with the commemoration of Earth Day, on April 22, 2019, 38 residents of Pancer Hamlet, Sumberagung Village, Pesanggaran Subdistrict, Banyuwangi and the EcoRanger team worked together to organize and quick count the piles of waste that had been piled up in the Pulau Merah Landfill. EcoRanger is a program initiated by the Greeneration Foundation that focuses on waste management in the tourism destinations. Pancer Hamlet has 3 (three) developing beach tourism, namely Pulau Merah Beach, Mustika Beach, and Wedi Ireng Beach. From the waste removal activity, at least 13,125 m3 of waste or around 2,187.5 tonnes of waste was successfully transported from Pulau Merah Landfill to Bulusan Landfill using a dump truck from the Environmental Agency of Banyuwangi Regency.
This activity is carried out to invite residents to see the reality and to reflect on the condition of waste in the landfill if the waste is only piled up and left without proper management. From this activity, hopefully, that residents will be motivated to start sorting waste at its source, such as houses and business places.
In addition, on the same day, Greeneration Foundation as the initiator of the EcoRanger program, explained the EcoRanger program in the Meeting Room of the Regional Secretary of Banyuwangi Regency. The exposure of the EcoRanger program was represented by Vanessa Letizia as the executive director of the Greeneration Foundation, Ridho Malik as the national EcoRanger project leader, and Hendro Subroto as the external team leader and national EcoRanger advocacy, then continued with a meeting with related SKPD regarding the physical development of Waste Management Centers (SEKOLA) as one of the main infrastructures of waste management in Pancer Hamlet. The EcoRanger Waste Management Center (SEKOLA) in Pancer Hamlet is expected to become an example of holistic and sustainable downstream waste management in the National Strategic Tourism Area (KSPN) in Indonesia.
